A Discovery of Fabula Ultima
One really great thing about my day job is that this environment is just chock full of nerds. We might all not being working in our ideal careers, but we're surviving and we're passionate about our interests. The world is so turbulent and many people have lost their jobs. I just feel grateful that we've managed to pay our bills and to work without losing our sparks.
A friend of mine through work is a huge TTRPG nerd. An even bigger one than me as she plays a variety of TTRPGs. While being a long time TTRPG player myself, I don't consider myself nearly as prolific or learned as her as she has encountered and played a vast swath of systems. On the other hand, I tend to stick to what I know: Dungeons & Dragons, and now Daggerheart. However, my friend has managed to convince me on a system she's grown quite fond of recently: Fabula Ultima.
For the uninitiated, Fabula Ultima is TTJRPG, meaning that it is a table-top RPG that focuses on Japanese RPG systems and bringing them to life. It features simple a simple rules set married with complex and intricate build paths, which all come together to push an epic story of heroes vs villains in marvelous fantastical settings. Their draw heavily from Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and other titans in the JRPG genre, and their inspirations become quite clear when taking a look at their art and systems. Now, it should be fairly obvious at this point that I was completely sold on the system, even to the point of pledging a Kickstarter for a deluxe version of the product featuring art by the Yoshitaka Amano.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be actually able to play this system any time soon (as a game master definitely), considering that I am already in the midst of running two campaigns, both of which have adopted the Daggerheart system. Additionally, Daggerheart itself has been a huge hit with my players due to a various reasons but a big one being the Experiences mechanic and how the game allows for such creativity and flexibility for the players.
If you've got the spare change, please feel free to support this campaign. And if you have a table needing a Fabula Ultima player, please shoot me a message on Discord. I am in search of testing out this system!
